2013.10.11
The 11th “Network for Education and Research” meeting of the Program for Capacity Building in Global Water-Environmental Engineering was held at the Faculty of Science and Engineering on October 11, 2013. A total of 81 people from partner businesses, public agencies concerned with the Program and students attended the meeting.

The themes of the meeting included (1) An implementation report on the internship program in academic year 2013, (2) Students who were admitted for academic year 2013 introduced themselves, (3) Topics concerning the water environment projects, and (4) An announcement of the upcoming “Symposium on Global Water Environmental Engineering Study in Bangkok (tentative name)”.

At the onset of the meeting, Dr. Tadashi Yamada, the Program organizer cum professor for the Graduate School of Science and Engineering gave an address expressing his deepest gratitude for supporting this program.

The report on the internship program in academic year 2013 was presented by 8 students enrolled in the “Global Water Environment” course in the first semester of their doctorial course.

As for internship, while half of the course’s students studied “river environment and water quality control”, the other half of the students who have the strong will to work in Japanese companies learned the superior analysis technology of Japan which is a strong point of the training organization. And it is one of the characteristic trends of this term’s internship.

In addition to the contents of the training, students also reported their findings in areas such as business customs and loyalty of Japanese employees to their companies.

The comments, such as an excellent foreign student’s earnest attitude touching off the company, and making the training more substantial next year, were made by the trainers of internship organizations.

Prof. Yamada mentioned that even if he guides students with the same thing at university, students don’t really understand the importance of what the Prof. said, but once they stay in the real business society and receive a trainer’s guidance, they come out understanding it and undergo a valuable opportunity as much as possible through the Program in their school days. He would like to appreciate the partners of the Network for Education and Research from the bottom of his heart.

Mr. Odaira, General Coordinator of the Program cum specially appointed professor for the Graduate School of Science and Engineering asked to employ excellent overseas student in the Program and also suggested they offer the internship opportunity through more companies.

Then, 15 overseas students who were admitted for academic year 2014 (11 Chinese, a Korean and three Vietnamese) introduced themselves in Japanese. Their self introduction contained information such as their hometown, major and job after graduation.

In the fourth theme, “Topics concerning water environment projects ” , Prof. Yamada introduced the necessity of strong capacity building in civil engineering society in Japan for the purpose of the expanding overseas market, and the necessity of a proposal submitted by the water environmental experts towards such as an action-plan-on –prevention of -global-warming (adaptation) ,and a capital reform project.

Finally, Mr. Odaira, specially appointed professor for the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, introduced an outline of the “Symposium on Global Water Environmental Engineering Study in Bangkok” and also ended the meeting with his appeal for positive participation from each company at the upcoming symposium.
