2014.03.08

This is an invitation to the 20th Central Library Special Exhibition: Collection Related to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and John Ruskin.

Venue:
Central Library, 2F Exhibition Space

Dates:
October 25th (Fri) to November 30th (Sat), 2013
(This special exhibition is open to anyone during museum hours. For members of the general public who wish to view the exhibit, please inform the library reception.)

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was a group formed by young British painters and writers in the 19th century. Members of the group gathered to respect the unaffected emotional purity of all art before the painter Raphael, a famous painter of the Italian Renaissance.

The Central Library’s collections include works by figures of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood including Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882), John Everett Millais (1829-1896), William Holman Hunt (1827-1910), Rossetti’s younger sister Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894) and Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), etc. The library also houses famous works of John Ruskin (1819-1900), a social thinker and art critic who championed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and had a major impact on the philosophy of the movement. The library possesses approximately a total of 200 pieces, comprising one of the finest collections in Japan.

The collection will be introduced by Professor Emeritus Kensuke Morimatsu (formerly affiliated with the Faculty of Law) in the 22nd Edition of My CUL (published in early November), a newsletter for the Central Library. In addition, the library will hold a special exhibition so that the collection can be viewed by many people.

We hope that you will visit our library and enjoy this precious collection.
